Caracasbaai
Location: Curacao, Netherlands Antilles
Client: Royal Caribbean International Cruises
Services: Planning, Landscape Architecture
Caracasbaai is situated along the southwestern shore of Curacao Island amongst a backdrop of new residential communities and strategic investments in the tourism and hospitality sector. Measuring approximately 108 hectares (267 acres), the project area is effectively an island peninsula connected by a land causeway at its northwest corner. Adjacent to the project area is Fort Beeckenburg, one of Curacao’s ancient forts built in 1701, and the Old Quarantine Hospital – which both anchor the site in the island’s history. The regional roadway network connecting the site affords easy access to Willemstad’s Central Business District (8km), the Curacao International Airport (15km), Jan Thiel Lagoon, other on- and off-shore recreational amenities, and natural areas found throughout the southern end of the island.
In collaboration with 505Design, LandDesign developed a conceptual vision plan for the Caracasbaai Cruise Village & Resort Area for Royal Caribbean International Cruises. This dynamic project seeks to create an active, economically self-supporting mixed-use waterfront with broad appeal to the residents of Curacao, visitors from a number of tourism segments, cruise travel enthusiasts, land-based luxury and premium resort guests, fractional share and vacation club owners, yachting vacationers, and soft adventure seekers. Its expansive water views, dramatic topography, and environmental features work together to create a site unique to Curacao and the southern Caribbean region.
