Launching Summer with an Inspiring Week of Collaboration and Mentorship

“LandDesign’s commitment to investing in, mentoring, and developing professionals, including interns, is a testament to the collaborative and people-centric culture LandDesign is built on.” – Ashley Feitel, PLA – Associate, Senior Designer

A Culture of Growth

The profound level of talent and innovation shown by our designers doesn’t simply appear – it is cultivated through a culture of collaboration and mentorship. LandDesign believes that this investment in growing our people begins even before they are full-time employees. Our team is passionately committed to fostering an environment for success and creativity – this starts with our interns. Working alongside LandDesigners from across the firm for an entire summer, our interns are critical members of the team. They have an incredible opportunity to get hands-on experience and become fully immersed in LandDesign Projects – setting them up to successfully begin their professional careers.

Our Interns Are Contributors, Not Task Rabbits

Designers don’t learn by getting coffee, making copies, or drawing never ending as-builts. LandDesign believes in learning by doing, seeing, and experiencing – which is why our internship program kicks-off with a week-long engaging charrette. Beginning on Day 1, interns convene at our host office where they are quickly immersed in our dynamic office culture, welcomed by a mentor group consisting of junior designers, studio leaders, and partners. They then embark on a guided tour of LandDesign projects – including the site of their charrette project. These project tours not only expose them to the scale and quality of work LandDesign brings to the communities we work in, but also offers interns a valuable opportunity to ask questions and advice from the actual designers who worked on these sites.

Collaborative By Design

After drawing inspiration from the work of the firm and the perspective of our LandDesigners, the interns put their ideas to paper. Working collaboratively in small teams composed of both landscape architecture and civil engineering students, they get a glimpse of the uncommon collaboration experienced at LandDesign every day. As they move through the various creative stages, our design leaders participate by mentoring, reviewing concepts, sharing ideas, and sketching alongside the interns allowing them time to enhance their arsenal of design skills.

Crafting Future Design Leaders

The week culminates with the interns presenting their hard work to representatives from the client team as well as our designers firmwide. Simulating a formal client presentation, interns are given a chance to practice communicating their designs and thought processes to an audience. Designers and leaders at the firm ask questions and challenge them to dig deeper into the intent within their designs.

Participating in this week-long charrette lays the foundations for our interns’ success. Following the charrette week, our interns disperse to their home offices, where they continue to work alongside professional designers engaging in real projects for real LandDesign clients. As they gain hands-on experience, they can further refine their design skills, craft portfolio building projects, and gain valuable insight they’ll be able to draw from throughout their careers.
