Where Care Meets Competition

Blending elite athletic training with cutting-edge sports medicine, AdventHealth and the Orlando Magic redefine what a shared facility can become.

Faced with limited dedicated practice space and growing security concerns, the NBA’s Orlando Magic began exploring options for a state-of-the-art training facility designed to better support its players and coaching staff. At the same time, the team’s primary sponsor and partner, AdventHealth, was seeking a new physical therapy location that prompted a new joint vision: a combined healthcare and training center that would not only meet the team’s high-performance needs but also establish a premier sports medicine destination for Central Florida.

As a result of a strong, pre-existing relationship with the general contractor, LandDesign was tasked with elevating the architect’s design, bringing our expertise in site planning, landscape architecture, and urban streetscape integration. The 130,000-square-foot site was positioned only a few blocks away from LandDesign’s Orlando office, allowing our team to provide hyperlocal support through the duration of the project, including frequent site visits and real-time problem solving with Revit for a seamless design integration.

The Vision

Creating Space for Some Magic

Previously, the Orlando Magic’s training operations were based at the RDV Sportsplex, a large, annually-leased gym facility leased annually and located several miles from the team’s home arena. However, increasing concerns over player safety, limited privacy, and the constraints of a rented space pushed the organization to seek a more secure, purpose-built training environment. Proximity to the Kia Center–which is now just a short walk from the new facility–was also a key factor in the relocation, providing greater convenience and connectivity between practice and game-day operations. Every element of the new facility was thoughtfully designed to enhance player performance, wellness, and recovery. At its heart is a dynamic team “living room,” serving as a central hub for players and staff. The space also includes two regulation courts, seamlessly linked to an upper-level viewing area that fosters both observation and connection.

LandDesign infused the Magic’s branding and identity throughout the site, integrating custom blue pavers in the main walkways. Sustainability was a key driver throughout the project, guiding the selection of Florida-friendly plantings that support local biodiversity and promote water conservation. The facility also utilizes natural daylight and strategic sun shading to reduce reliance on artificial lighting, increasing energy efficiency while enhancing the user experience. These thoughtful choices all contributed to the project earning certification from the Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC).

On Par Amenities

In efforts to promote holistic wellness and relaxation, outdoor amenities include a thoughtfully-designed putting green at the coach’s request. This recreational space has quickly become a favorite feature for the team, fostering friendly competitions between its players and staff.

Solutions for Safety

To address security and safety upfront, LandDesign incorporated keycard-only access areas protected by a custom-designed screen hedge that conceals security fencing, enhancing privacy from the streetscape view without compromising aesthetics.

The Challenge

From Parking Lot to Premier Training Hub

The AdventHealth Training Center faced a unique set of challenges tied to its downtown Orlando location. The space had to maintain a balance between site security and the creation of a welcoming, pedestrian-friendly streetscape, especially given the center’s high-profile NBA training facilities and the public-facing AdventHealth clinic.

Additionally, existing sidewalks surrounding the facility were found to be non-compliant with downtown Orlando’s corridor standards, requiring upgrades and widening pathways to a 15-foot pedestrian path.

Our team remained committed to enhancing the public realm. Streetscape improvements were carefully designed to integrate an existing mature live oak at the southeast corner, preserving a landmark that now offers shade for the outdoor players amenity area, as well as cultivating a strong sense of place at this pedestrian-friendly intersection. In addition, LandDesign restored irrigation lines to support the health of other existing trees, reinforcing the lush, walkable environment envisioned for the corridor. Through proactive problem-solving and close collaboration, the AdventHealth Training Center ultimately delivered on its vision of creating a safe, vibrant, and pedestrian-friendly destination that contributes to the vitality and resurgence of downtown Orlando.
