Eastern Market Metro Park

As the Capitol Hill neighborhood grows, their unique open space and play area needs are evolving. In response, members of the public recognized the opportunity to improve the park’s functionality by marrying open space with history and play. One parcel, bordered by private homes, draws its inspiration from a quieter, residential feel and features a playground, splash pad, and shaded gathering spaces. Another parcel draws inspiration from its civic orientation and contains the Metro entrance and is adjacent to the public library and local businesses. The design includes programmable space, allowing the library to spill out and host community events.

Eastern Market Metro Park is comprised of six detached parcels bisected by major transportation pathways. Creating a cohesive experience and singular sense of place was challenged by the District’s existing street grid, long history, and complex array of federal and local oversight agencies. Embracing the distinct uses within each parcel, we created a common design language through repeating materials and patterns and wayfinding and signage. Each parcel is designed with flexibility in mind to accommodate active and passive programming and events, while responding to the adjacent land uses, including residences, private development, and civic spaces, to anchor the park within the neighborhood. Additionally, we permanently closed two streets and repositioned them as pedestrian spaces to further connect the park and improve access.
