A Campus of Knowledge and Discovery

The Winter Park Library and Events Center is a celebration of the diverse, multi-generational community it serves.

In 2017, the City of Winter Park, Florida approved funding for a 21st century, state-of-the-art library and events center — signifying a new chapter for the city. Located on the northwest corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Park, this visionary facility promotes equitable access to education, recreation, and the arts. As a civic and cultural hub for the community, the Winter Park Library and Events Center facilitates moments for celebration and an exchange of knowledge, creating a place where the the local community and visitors can interact, learn, and gather.

The project is a defining piece of cultural and civic infrastructure for the city and was championed by a multi-disciplinary design team led by world-renowned architect, Sir David Adjaye. LandDesign was engaged to provide landscape architecture and civil engineering services for the center, collaborating closely with the City of Winter Park and Adjaye Associates to reflect the diverse, multi-generational community in every design feature. Completed in 2021, the Winter Park Library and Events center is a civic statement, representing the city’s commitment to strengthening the community experience through social gathering, intellectual nourishment, and connection to nature.

Our Vision

A Union Between Architecture and Landscape Design

The Winter Park Library and Events Center is a true collaboration between architecture and the landscape. Guided by biophilic design principles, the site is envisioned as a micro-village comprised of three pavilions that work in harmony with the tropical ecology. Each pavilion rests on a raised belvedere that provides unobstructed views to a signature lake, which serves as an aesthetic amenity and the site’s stormwater management system. A network of green spaces weave throughout the built structures to further connect visitors to the natural landscape and foster a strong sense of environmental stewardship.

Inspired by Nature

The project’s design is inspired by the local flora and fauna and is reflected in the native and regionally resourced planting selection for the library.

The Challenge

A Reflection of the Community

For the Winter Park Library and Events Center to be a success, it had to be fully embraced by the community. The project received a lot of community attention and, as such, required an extensive public outreach strategy to ensure the diverse voices of this multi-generational community informed every step of the design process. LandDesign worked with Adjaye Associates to host informal and formal workshops where the public could engage in rich dialog to discover and address their concerns, needs, and vision for the center. These workshops allowed the design team to solicit meaningful feedback and communicate the long-lasting value of this project as a critical piece of cultural and civic infrastructure for the city.

Prioritizing Water Management

On-site stormwater is treated and collected in the signature lake and is reused to hydrate the landscape surrounding the facility.
